Self-Assessment
Self-Assessment
Led by Medical Director Douglas Y. Roese, M.D. and Jason W. Christie, M.D., and supported by Nurse Practitioner Donna J. Lecher, R.N., N.P., the Vein Clinic at SIS offers the highest levels of surgical care throughout southern Indiana and the state. One area of particular pride is our Vascular Services Practice Area. Vascular surgery procedures are those that deal with arteries, veins and lymphatics. While the vascular surgery field is quite specialized, the types of patients are quite diverse. For instance, aortic aneurysm repair is usually needed as patients age. Varicose vein repair, on the other hand, often affects younger women.

Varicose Veins
Millions of Americans are affected by varicose veins: abnormal, visible veins that develop beneath the skin.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the legs accompanied by visible veins
  • Swollen, painful veins in the legs

Greatest Risk Factors for Developing Varicose Veins
Gender Women (are a 4:1 risk over men) Jobs People who sit a lot, particularly with crossed legs; also, people who are on their feet for much of the day, particularly on harder floors Weight Obesity increases risk Age Veins become more frequent with age Pregnancy It is estimated that 1 in 10 mothers will develop varicose veins.

Treatments
Depending on the severity of the varicose vein, we will treat it in one of three ways:

  1. Venefit™ Procedure is a minimally invasive alternative to vein stripping that involves closing diseased veins.
  2. Sclerotherapy involves injecting the vein with a saline solution to close off the area, cutting the vein off from the circulatory system.
  3. Vein stripping, or removal of the vein, is often performed with larger or perforating veins.
